After learning the first basic milonga steps, I find that I have been able to build up patterns and a good lead in a fairly organic and spontaneous way. I have other comments on a blog I just started

  • As a follow who has been dancing for a year, I am finding, to my surprise, that milonga tangos tend to go better than regular ones. I think it's that I have less time to think, and I can just get into that intuitive mindreading place that all follows (or, rather interpreters of the lead) aspire to.

Milongas are fun, too! It's nice to have a tango that isn't so SERIOUS all of the time, though serious is wonderful in its own way.
    • I feel the same way. Somehow the music is interpreted at much more basic "beat" level, and I can just "let go" and have fun.
I noticed that you are in the Bay Area. Where do you usually dance?
      • I am moving to Ithaca, NY as we speak, but I used to take classes with Nora and with Dave and Nancy Mendoza. I was too timid, unfortunately, to go to any actual Milongas, and after making my yearly trip to Mendocino and going to a milonga there with my two original tango teachers, I think I did myself a disservice. Milongas are, after all, what one takes lessons for in the first place, and it's a good idea to keep that in mind.
  • something that was an insight for me in dancing milonga,..." just think of the milonga as walking normal and the tango as slow walking, just take smaller steps"
I love the variety, milonga and vals are like icing and spinkles to my yummy raw, no sugar, vegan, organic, local really good for you cake.
