Tango and Zydeco, all under one dome, on the playa?! Someone is so brilliant! This is makin me a HAPPY girl...In 2005, I tangoed on the playa...are you the same crew that brought the floor then? I think maybe not...maybe they were from San Fran. I'm here in Austin, and we actually have a funny little group of us called the "Zydango Gals" b/c we dance both zydeco and tango. I'm glad to hear that there is at least one other Zydango Gal in the world...it's Windy, no? I'm delighted this is happening...I think you'll see me often in camp on the playa. Thanks for dreaming this up and making it a reality!

Well shoot, thanks for thanking me and thinking I'm awesome, but I'm not part of their camp. I really like the people that are running it, but I am camping with some non5tgb-['tango friends at theirr theme camp this year (it's my first year going). I'll definitely be at a milonga or three though. I'm going to bite the bullet and take a pair of comme il fauts. I can't imagine going 500 miles to the middle of the dessert and finding the one place inthe middle of 40,00 stoned people to tango and not having them. They have stripes. :)

Hmm...shoes. Hadn't thought about that just yet. In 2005, I danced in cowboy boots. That worked out prettty ok. But, at this point, I have tango shoes that I wouldn't mind destroying with playa dust. Those are the ones I'll take! Brave woman, Aurora, with the comme il fauts.

I'm in a camp called Havana Room which will have a stage. I am probably going to be around looking for a follow who would like to perform (mostly/perhaps entirely improvised) a few pieces, probably waltzes.
Of course I will come to your dome foremost to dance.
So cool that you are creating a Tango space at Burning Man.
    Thanx greatly :-)

I'm not gooing with Tangobeso, I'm camping with some non tango friends. However,I will most liekly be at milonga or two on Playa. I'll be camping with Tsunami Camp @ 4:30 and Esplanade. We have a stage too, so maybe we should try to meet up or something. There are some good follows going with Tango Beso, so you might also check their website (tangobeso.com) Best of luck to you though!!

        Thanks Aurora,
Havana Room is in the 3:00 keyhole, so we are close. I'll drop by Tsunami some time. HR is new this year and there is a ton of work to so I expect to be on site most of the time early in the week. If you are riding by, come see. I'm a bit ancient compared to you, so don't be shocked!

Surreal.............I was dressed sort of like Wonder woman in a dust storm at Burningman one day...I was getting pelted with sand so I tucked into this big tent for cover and sat down...it had a hardwood floor and even a chandelier. 2 minutes later a guy came over to me and said, "we need more woman for the lesson" and asked me to join... I was like, "no, no, I dont know the tango, what lesson?". He said, "come on try it", so I did.

3 1/2 hours later I was still dancing!!!! Loved it! IT was so surreal to be learning tango from a topless teacher, with of us all in goggles and breathing respirators, with the wind and sand swirling around, threatening to rip the tent down. When I danced with someone I basically had no idea what the person I was dancing with looked like, because your both so covered in dusty facial gear . Both my dancing partners were avid tango dancers, so I got quite an education and a huge advantage to learning quickly. One dude was from Heebee Geebee Camp. I cant seem to remember his name........ I thank him from the very bottom of my heart, for scooping me up, encouraging me to try and for his abundance of patience. The other partner was this guy, Matteus from Switzerland. Wish I could find him again. I really, really enjoyed dancing with him. Such a romantic dance. Tough not to swoon when the connection is there. Loved it. So long story short, when I got home to LA from the burn...I googled Tango lessons. My first Tango class was yesterday! Any LA Tango dancing get togethers???
Loved it, loved it, loved it!

What a wonderful way to fall in love with tango! Thanks for sharing this story. I also got to experience the lovely dome (thank you, tangobeso!) and some of the really fantastic tango and salsa dancers on the playa. I was elsewhere during the whiteouts, but it sounds like the tangobeso dome was a pretty magical place to be that afternoon. I wish you a wonderful tango journey...

Nice name Jodie. Yep, it was very magical and surreal. Does it make a real difference in the beginning on what shoes I wear? I guess I should probably get some capezio type dancing shoes? Where in LA would one find a pair of those? So dont want my feet to hurt. I had Harley Boots on in the Tangobeso dome. Sort of like dragging lead! lol

Yep, the right (comfy) shoes have been really important to my enjoyment or lack thereof of tango and to improving the quality of my dance. Since most of the weight is on the ball of the foot so much for the tango follow, cushion under the ball is about the most important thing to me in a shoe. Also, as we age the fat deposit under the ball of the foot decreases, which makes me extra cautious about not abusing the natural comfort/fat pads in my feet. The ONLY shoe I've found that does this well is from Jorge Nel Designs, www.tangoinmiami.com/design/
When ordering, you can specify a double layer of cushion and a platform, both of which I recommend, and arch support if you need it. On another issue, you get different responses from a leather vs. suede sole: less drag from smooth leather, more control from suede.
You can definitely buy a pair of practice shoes from a capezio or dance store (I don't live in LA, so I have no idea where one is), but if you think you'll stick with tango even a year, the difference between at $60 pair of capezios and a $130 pair of Jorge Nel's will be WELL worth it in the quality and comfort of your dance.
          Happy feet to you!

Thanks for the link Jodie. I wish I could find a store that sells these designs locally. My feet are so tricky to fit, I would be pretty difficult to order them over the internet...I need to try them on... Sometimes I wear a 7.5, 8, 8.5.....ya just never know.... Note taken on all the extra padding, ect....ALL so neccessary for me. A few years ago, I could wear high heels no problem, but in my forties, it seems my back, feet, and neck, just dont seem to be able to take it anymore... low heels or platforms seem to work best.... I will keep researching, but thank you so much for all your informative help. I appreciate it.
            Thanks, Jody

I have a hard-to-fit foot as well. I found orderinf from one of the companies that take your measurements and then make them custom a really good way to go.It takes like three months to get them in the mail, but it is totally worth while when you finally receive them.

I am gonna go check out a tango dance shoe place in Westwood today and try a few pairs on. I will get something out of a store initially, but if I continue to enjoy Tango as I am so far, I will definitely have custom shoes made for sure. You and about 10 other people have told me what a difference custom makes. Thanks!
